Swimming pools built on proper groundwork
A swimming pool is only as good as the ground it sits in. Get the dig, the base and the drainage right and it gives you years of use. Get them wrong and you end up with movement, cracked surrounds and water going where it should not.
Andover Groundworks & Construction handles swimming pool installation across Andover, Winchester and the rest of Hampshire. We dig out, take the spoil away, build the base and the structure around the pool, run the drainage and services, then lay the surround. Whether the pool is going in the garden or inside a pool room, the groundwork is where we start, and it is what we know best.
What we do on a pool job
Every pool is different, but the work usually follows the same order:
- Setting out, so the pool sits level and exactly where you want it
- Excavation and muck-away, with access planned around your garden or house
- A reinforced concrete base and structure built to take the weight of the water
- Drainage around the pool, so surface water and backwash go where they should
- Trenches and ducting for the pump, filtration, heating and lighting
- Coping, steps and the surround in porcelain, natural stone or block paving
Pool surrounds and paving that stay put
The surround is the part you see and walk on every day. It has to be level, comfortable on bare feet and laid on a base that will not shift. We set falls so water runs away from the edge of the pool, and we finish steps, coping and edges neatly.
We are approved installers for Marshalls, Brett and Bradstone, so the slabs we lay come with the manufacturer's backing. Porcelain is a popular choice around pools because it is hard-wearing and easy to keep clean, and we choose slabs with a slip rating suited to wet ground.
One team, from the dig to the finished pool
A pool brings several trades together. Where the shell, filtration or heating comes from a specialist, we coordinate the job so the right people turn up in the right order and you are not left chasing anyone. You deal with us from the first visit to the day you swim.
We install swimming pools across Hampshire and into Wiltshire and Berkshire, including Andover, Winchester, Basingstoke, Alton, Chandlers Ford, Newbury and Salisbury.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need planning permission for a swimming pool?
Often not. An outdoor pool in a back garden usually counts as permitted development, but it depends on the size, where it sits and whether the home is listed or in a conservation area. An indoor pool that needs a new building has its own rules. We talk it through with you before anything is planned.
How long does a pool installation take?
It depends on the size of the pool, the ground and the access. On a larger job the groundwork stage alone can run to a few weeks. You get a realistic timescale with your quote, and we keep you updated as the job moves.
Can you lay a new surround around an existing pool?
Yes. If the pool itself is sound but the surround is tired, cracked or slippery, we can lift it and lay a new one in porcelain, natural stone or block paving, putting the falls and drainage right at the same time.
How do I get a quote?
Call 07807 023084 or email info@andover-groundworks.co.uk. We will come out, look at the ground and the access, and give you a clear, free quote.
