Local groundworks for Kings Worthy and the Worthys
Kings Worthy sits just north-east of Winchester, between the A33 and the River Itchen. It has a bit of everything: old cottages along the lanes, family homes from the last century and newer houses around Springvale. We work right across the village and its neighbours, Abbots Worthy, Headbourne Worthy and Martyr Worthy, and it is a straight run down the A34 from our base in Andover.
Andover Groundworks & Construction is a family business with more than twenty years in groundworks, paving and building. The same team handles the whole job, from digging out to the final joint, so you are not passed between firms.
Driveways for village homes
Off-road parking is often the first job on a family home, especially along the older lanes. We dig out front gardens and lay a new driveway in Kings Worthy in block paving, permeable paving or natural stone, built on a proper sub-base so it does not sink or rut.
Since 2008, a new hard surface over five square metres in a front garden needs to drain into the ground, or it needs planning permission. We design every driveway to deal with its own rainwater, so you stay on the right side of the rules.
Old walls, lanes and uneven gardens
Many of the older properties in the Worthys have flint or brick boundary walls, narrow lane frontages and gardens that were never quite level. We rebuild tired garden walls, add steps and retaining walls where the ground falls away, and make sure new work sits comfortably next to the old.
Lane access can be tight, so we plan deliveries, skips and machinery before the job starts, and we keep the lane clear for your neighbours while we work.
Patios, gardens and landscaping
Most of the village sits on chalk, which drains well, but gardens on the lower ground towards the Itchen can hold water after heavy rain. We look at the ground before we price, set the falls and add drainage where it is needed, so a new patio or lawn does not turn into a puddle every winter.
We lay garden paving in Kings Worthy in porcelain, sandstone and block, build steps, walls and raised beds, and finish gardens with turf or artificial grass. We are approved Trulawn installers, and as a landscaping company we can also add a pergola or a garden room.
Groundworks, drainage and extensions
On bigger projects we start with the groundworks: setting out, excavation, footings, slabs and drainage installation, including new connections and soakaways where the chalk allows. We then carry on with the building work for property extensions and new rooms, so one team is responsible from the first dig to the finished space.

Questions we get asked
Do you cover Abbots Worthy, Headbourne Worthy and Martyr Worthy?
Yes, all of the Worthys, plus Springvale, Itchen Abbas, Easton and Kings Barton. If you are in the SO23 area and not sure whether we reach you, just give us a call.
Will I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Not if it drains properly. A new front driveway over five square metres needs a permeable surface, or to drain onto your own garden, to avoid needing planning permission. We design every driveway to do that.
Can you deal with a wet garden near the river?
Yes. We work out why the water is sitting there first, then add land drains, a soakaway or better falls as part of the job, so the new patio or lawn stays usable through the winter.
